Instructions for the Graduate Admissions Process – 2nd Semester of 2026

Applications for the Graduate Admissions Process for the 2nd Semester of 2026 will be open from March 4 to March 19, 2026, with openings for Master’s and Doctoral programs in the Graduate Program in German Language and Literature, Department of Modern Languages. Some stages of the selection process will be conducted remotely. Please read the instructions below carefully.

The admissions process for the Graduate Program in German Language and Literature takes place twice a year (with application periods in March and August) and is divided into four stages: i) language proficiency examination; ii) content examination; iii)evaluation and oral examination of the research proposal and curriculum vitae; iv) assignment of academic advisors. All stages are described in detail in the official calls for applications. The stages are non-eliminatory, and each partial result remains valid for two years.

Documentation: Before starting the application process, please ensure that all required files are available. The total size of the uploaded files must not exceed 15 MB. Access the call for applications via the “Call for Applications:” menu at the bottom of the page to verify the required documentation. All documents must be scanned and submitted in PDF format. Photographed documents subsequently converted to PDF will not be accepted.

 Attention: Foreign applicants who are unable to generate a CPF number must enter the number 9 eleven times (99999999999) in the corresponding field.

All required documents listed in the call for applications must be submitted digitally in PDF format. Photographed documents will not be accepted. PDF files containing diplomas must include two pages (front and back) within the same file. Each page must correspond to one side of the document, following the model available here.

Applications will be rejected if the documentation does not comply with the requirements of the call for applications. At the end of the application period, applicants will be notified by email in case of rejection. Therefore, before starting the application process, carefully read the call for applications and complete the forms available at the bottom of the page.

Application Form Guidelines:

 All fields in the application form must be completed mandatorily, according to the selected program;  Before submitting your application, review all fields carefully to ensure that no information or document is missing; The application system is configured to prevent more than one application to the same program by the same applicant; All information requested in the application form is mandatory, especially the email address, as it will be used to confirm submission of the application;

 

Applicants are advised to submit the application only once and to ensure that all required fields are properly completed. All applicants will receive a copy of their application as confirmation.

Do not leave your application submission to the last moment, as the system may experience instability due to high access volume near the deadline.

Applications WILL NOT be accepted after the deadline and WILL NOT be extended. The application period will end strictly on March 19, 2026. If access issues occur, please try submitting the application using a different web browser.

  • If the email address is entered incorrectly, the applicant will not receive confirmation, which may result in disadvantages during the selection process;
  • After carefully reading the call for applications and scanning the required documentation in PDF format, click on “Apply” to submit your application;
  • The information provided is the sole responsibility of the applicant, who acknowledges that the absence of any required document or the submission of false information will result in rejection of the application and exclusion from the selection process;
  • Applicants who self-identify as Black (preta/o), Parda/o (a Brazilian census category
    referring to persons of mixed racial background), Indigenous, or Quilombola may choose to participate in the Affirmative Action Policy. To do so, they must upload a photograph and the Self-Declaration Form at the time of application (download the Self-Declaration Form);
  • Generate the application fee payment slip via the "Application Fee" link. After payment, generate a PDF file of the payment receipt, which will be required to complete the application;
  • Application Fee Waiver: Requests must be submitted via the application form, replacing the payment receipt (read more here).

Schedule of Stages

Submission of Research Proposals: April 6, 2026 (Monday)

German Language Proficiency Examination: The examination will be conducted in person at the Letras Building, via the onset.de platform.

Date and time: April 15, 2026 (Wednesday), at 2:00 p.m.

The exam may also be taken at other certified centers and on alternative dates; in such cases, applicants must submit the results by April 17, 2026.

Written Examination (remote): April 22, 2026 (Wednesday), from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Curriculum Analysis and Oral Examination of Approved Preliminary Research Proposals (remote): May 5–6, 2026 (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Forms and Declarations for Download

- Master’s applicants who have not yet been awarded their undergraduate degree and are awaiting formal degree conferral

Verification of the Documentation

All documents required and listed in the call for applications must be submitted digitally in PDF format. Documents that have been photographed and subsequently converted to PDF, or that are of insufficient image quality, will not be accepted.

For Master’s applicants who have not yet received their undergraduate diploma and are awaiting degree conferral: applicants must complete and sign the Statement of Commitment, by which they formally commit to submitting official proof of degree conferral by the last day of the enrollment period reserved for newly admitted students (download the file at the bottom of the page).

For Doctoral applicants who have not yet received their Master’s diploma: in the absence of the diploma, applicants may submit the minutes of the thesis defense or a certificate of defense.
Applicants who are still awaiting their defense must complete and sign the Statement of Commitment, by which they formally commit to completing the defense by the last day of the enrollment period reserved for newly admitted students (download the file at the bottom of the page).

For applicants who completed their Master’s degree outside USP: the standard declaration form, duly completed by the institution of origin, must be submitted together with the application (download the file at the bottom of the page).


For applicants holding a Master’s degree obtained from a foreign university and who require degree recognition or equivalency: both the recognition and
equivalency requests must be submitted at least six (6) months prior to the application period. For further information, click here.

If the documentation does not comply with the stated requirements, the application will be rejected, and applicants will be notified by email at the end of the application period.
